Wot no locking hubs?

I know very little, and the Haynes manual is the worst car manual I have ever seen.

My wheels have bulbous centre-bits. I was expecting to see manual locking hubs underneath, but instead... see pic.

What are these? Are they auto-locking or something? Always locked? Locked when on holiday?

Does this mean I have to keep those wheels with the big nose? I will have to paint them yellow like a Messerschmitt.

Those are flanges. Always locked.

Some SJ's came with them, some came with manual locking hubs, then later the Vitaras and Jimnys got vacuum operated hubs that auto-engage when you select 4wd.

Manual hubs will fit if you want to retrofit them. Some hardcore offroaders prefer the flanges, they're very difficult to damage. And they're pretty much all anyone fits on the rear if they do a full float kit for the rear.

Cheers Anton. Have never owned a 4WD before so it's all new.
