Noises coming from rear axle, now with added video
Hi guys,
Just come back from Australia about 3 weeks ago after SJ being stood still in my Gran's garage for near 7 months, started up first time, think it was the handbrake seized but managed to free it pretty easily and been driving around in her for a good 3 weeks trouble free like normal. However, yesterday I noticed a minor sort of clonking noise coming from the rear driver's side when changing speeds, when cruising at 30-40mph there is no clonking but a slight hum almost like tyre noise. It doesn't feel any different to drive at all.
I've jacked the rear up, had a play with the wheel to make sure it wasn't wheel bearing but all feels fine. Had a look at the prop shaft and around the diff for any signs of an oil leak but all looks pretty normal.
Is there anything that any of you suggest I try? or anyone know what the problem could be?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Al

Re: Noises coming from rear axle
When you checked the prop for oil leakage did you check the condition of the UJ's. When these are worn they will clunk when going from engine driving to deceleration and visa-versa.

Re: Noises coming from rear axle
actually wait there is a little oil on one of the UJs, but it doesn't look super super fresh, but it still looks pretty normal, what do you think?

Re: Noises coming from rear axle
The uj's are normally sealed and therefore have no oil on them (but some do have grease nipples). Really it's just a case of trying to turn the propshaft by hand and looking for any play/movement on the UJ's. Basically there should be no play
.
Something like this, although this ones well worn.

Disconnect the rear prop, and check UJs while its not fitted, they can go dry and stiff as well, they should be smooth and there should be no excessive play.
Physically try and wobble the diff flange, in out, up down and side to side. Is there any play?
Id also double check the wheel bearings, try and wobble them from top to bottom and well as in and out.
To rule out the rear diff you could try driving it in 4wd while the rear prop is off so its only front wheel drive.
Also check tbox mounts in case its actually the tcase moving about.
